Backgrounds: Burn patients suffer many psychological problems. But due to stigma and misunderstanding about psychiatry patients hesitate to ask for psychiatric consultation. The aim of this study is to evaluate patient¡¯s concept and acceptance about psychiatric consultation and get more idea for further study.
Methods: Thirty nine patient were interviewed, who had more than 15% burn in Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital Burn Center. Simple checklist about burn psychiatric consultation with eight item made by burn psychiatrist were used. Data was compared between patients who received psychiatric consultation and others.
Results: Requirement for confidentiality were different between group (p=0.01). Concern about psychiatric medication side effects and dependency were similar between groups (p=0.58, p=0.48). There were some patients who feel their psychological stress after burn is more severe than others in patients without psychiatric consultation group.
Conclusions: Burn patients with psychiatric consultation experience thinks it is recommendable. However their sharing about consultation experience and actual recommendation is not that much. We need more focused study about this discrepancy and also about patients concern about psychiatric drug dependency and side effects. (Journal of Korean Burn Society 2007;10:18-21)
